Deep within the enchanting rolling fields, lived a boy named Shepherd. His existence was essentially unadulterated, simple, and honest. His primary duty was essentially to care for his flock of sheep.
Their gentle baas and the rustling of the breezes among the lone tree on the peak were his constant companions. Day in day, looking out for his responsibilities inculcated in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.
However, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. In one such instance out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty scheme.
Tales of wolves preying on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a trick on the villagers.
One day he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but discovered no beast.
The boy giggled at the puzzle on their faces. This prank persisted for a few more days. However, one noon, a real wolf did charge at the flock. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could rescue only few of here his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the results of false alarms.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is difficult to regain. It's a story as appropriate today as it was in the past.
